I had the misfortune (maybe to weak a word) to have seen Tom Cruise's Mummy, the start of the now dispensed Dark World Universe. Special effects, whether full of CGI or the stuff of these 1930s classics should be in service to the story, not THE story. The actors, writers and directors referenced in this awesome article understood that. It was not that the Mummy could do super human things but rather then anger and menace in Karloff's eyes and that awesome striation on his skin that still give me the chills.
