There is evidence that someone associated with the protesters fired first. It became so political so quickly that it wasn't investigated as fully as it should have been.
My father was career Army/Air Force so experienced the verbal and even physical abuse when coming home in uniform. However, once he left the major cities, especially college towns, he was respected and honored, getting rides automatically based solely on his being in uniform and often being invited to share a meal. It was a good measurement of the influence professors were having on the young minds in their care. And still is IMO.
